Genestealer Cult: Early List Building - 1,850

With the release last weekend of Deathwatch: Overkill, and the leak of the 40k rules for the Genestealer Cult (and subsequent publication by GW online), I went ahead and did some early list building, adding in Tyranids to complete the army.

The full formation, using all the models from the Deathwatch game, clocks in at 600 points. The Ghosar Quintus Broodkin formation gives the benefit of Infiltrate and Stealth to all units. Additionally, units that deploy using Infiltrate gain the Shrouded special rule for the first game turn and can charge. The Patriarch and Purestrains are allowed to infiltrate up to 1" away, regardless of line of sight. Finally, while the Patriarch is alive, all units in the formation gain Fearless and Adamantium Will.

The Broodkin is honestly a pretty solid formation that has the ability to tie down or destroy key elements of the enemy army. For my first list build, I want to really work to capitalize on the aggressiveness of the cult units and have other units that can put on the pressure. As such, I dug back in time a little bit in the Tyranid list vault and added in a Skyblight Swarm. The ObSec and regenerating Gargoyles should help with objective placement, and the entire formation has the speed to quickly support the Broodkin.

The Gargoyles and Harpies also fulfill a complimentary role to improve the assault prowess of the army. A combined Harpy charge and Gargoyle blinding venom will really make it hard for enemies to escape or strike back.

After adding a standard Flyrant loadout, we're up to 1445 points, leaving 405 points to go. One list I built adds on with more Gargoyles and another Flyrant in the Skytyrant Swarm. The Skytyrant flyrant gets the Reaper of Obliterax, Old Adversary, and Adrenal Glands. While there aren't points to give the entire swarm Adrenal for Fleet, the flyrant still benefits from Furious Charge, getting him up to S8 with Shred.

The other variant includes the same CC flyrant as the HQ in a CAD with 10 Hormagaunts and a Mucolid for troops, and a Tyrannocyte. To fit this in, we need to drop 10 points from one of the two flyrants, which can be done by taking a regular Bonesword and Lash Whip with Toxin Sacs.

So, in the end, the list looks something like this:

  • Ghosar Quintus Broodkin
    • Patriarch Ghosar
    • Magus Orthan Trysst
    • Primus Vorgan Trysst
    • Purestrain Princelings
    • The Favoured Disciples
    • The Faithful Throng
    • The Brothers Aberrant
  • Skyblight Swarm:
    • Hive Tyrant: Wings, Electroshock Grubs, 2xTL Devourers
    • 2x Harpy
    • Hive Crone
    • 3x10 Gargoyles
  • Tyranid CAD:
    • Hive Tyrant: Wings, Reaper of Obliterax, Adrenal Glands
    • Mucolid
    • 11 Hormagaunts
    • Tyrannocyte
Honestly, I kind of like the Skytyrant swarm combination, but I don't own 50 Gargoyles, so wouldn't run it. What combinations or lists are you coming up with to go with the Genestealer cult minis?
